PAG METER NOTES
2020-2021 had some great stories especially after getting to play when the world ended last year.
The good stories.

**We all should feel bad for the Student Athletes in the Northern Section of the state because the people who are in charge decided not to enter the state playoffs because they are soft, weak, spinless….whatever the reason is, the Northern Section forfeits, defaults and/or loses their rights so the winners from the South are State Champions!!!!
**It was a tremendous year for the Central Section Champion CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES and winning the Central Section Championship for the 9th straight year.
**A tremendous story of the Central Coast teams and they made a HUGE statement of PLEASE STOP CALLING IT A VALLEY CHAMPIONSHIP! IT IS A CENTRTAL SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP or a SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP. The Central Coast teams do not live in the Valley!
The Central Coast teams won it all in Division 1, Division 2, Division 3, and Division 4!
**The RIGHETTI HIGH WARRIORS had a fantastic year and won the Division 1 Section Championship.
**One of the best stories of the year was with the BUCHANAN BEARS. Here was a team that was flat out beat up from injuries and some teams would have shut it down, but Head Coach Adam Wall and his staff said NO-WAY! The Bears played a very young team down the stretch and the experience was priceless. Oh, by the way the Bears won the Division 3 State Championship beating Del Norte (San Diego) 78-62. Congratulations the Buchanan Bears.
**The NIPOMO TITANS got hot in the second half of the season and won the Division 2 Section Championship.
**The ST JOSEPH KNIGHTS won Division 3 section championship and the Roosevelt Rough Riders won the Division 4-A State Championship. Both teams were very good.
**The ORCUTT ACADAMY SPARTANS won the Division 4 Section Championship and their first Section Championship in school history.
**The STRATHMORE SPARTANS went coast to coast to win the Division 5 Section Championship. The Spartans also won the Division 6 State Championship. JAZMINE SOTO leaves Strathmore as the All-time leading scorer in Central Section history.

**The Corcoran Panthers won the Division 6-AA State Championship and will be the favorites to win it all in 2022 again because the entire team is coming back,
Now for the not so good stories of 2020-2021
The Memorial Panthers went undefeated and decided not to enter the playoff/tournament and compete because their best player was not going play. The Panthers would have played in the Open Division but did not want to play against Clovis West or Caruthers without their best. Plenty were very disappointed with the Panthers decision. You have one job!! Play!
Same goes to the Sierra Pacific Golden Bears. They also decided not to enter in the playoff/tournament. Very disappointing.
The Caruthers Blue Raiders had their best team in school history. 90% of the team played other sports at the same time and had to play in the Open Division and against teams that are not allowed to play other sports. I would have at least put them in the Division 1 playoffs.

SPECIAL AWARDS

PAG METER TEAMS OF THE YEAR
**A tremendous story of the Central Coast teams and they made a HUGE statement of STOP CALLING IT A VALLEY CHAMPIONSHIP! IT IS A CENTRTAL SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP or a SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP.
The Central Coast teams had a record year and won it all in,
Division 1 RIGHETTI HIGH WARRIORS
Division 2 NIPOMO TITANS
Division 3 ST JOSEPH KNIGHTS
Division 4 ORCUTT ACADAMY SPARTANS

Congratulations to all the Central Coast teams who do not live in the Valley!
To all local Media….make a note.
A special note to the BUCHANAN BEARS who won the Division 3 State Championship with a very young team and a team full of injuries. This team could be a 30 for 30 show someday and a story about competing with what you have! We all can learn from this team and how they never quit.
The 9 straight Central Section Champion CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES dominated the Section and only losing to the powerhouse Centennial Corona in the Open Division of the State Semifinals. CW finished 20-1 in a short season.

PAG METER PLAYER OF THE YEAR
NIKKI TOM-SENIOR-CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES
The 4-time PAGMETER All Star will leave with 4 Central Section Championship rings and will go down as one of the best to ever play at Clovis West. I will never forget when announcing the Championship game at Selland Arena when Nikki who was just a freshman and it was her coming out party. Nikki scored 19 huge points and if Nikki does not go off and hit some huge shots, the great Clovis West Central Section winning streak comes to an end. Nikki’s game is so smooth, never looks tired and loves taking the big shot. She can shoot the 3-pointer, pass the ball just as good as anybody, play pressure defense and can grab the big-tough rebound. The UC Irvine Anteaters are getting a real good one.

PAG METER SMALL SCHOOL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
AALIYAH THOMPSON-JUNIOR-CORCORAN PANTHERS

Aaliyah will come into her senior year as one of the best players in the Central Section. Aaliyah led the Panthers to the Division 6 State Championship. Her junior year was outstanding averaging 23 points and 12 rebounds per game. The Panthers will be the favorites to win it all in 2022 with Aaliyah Thompson leading the way.

PAG METER COACH OF THE YEAR
DESIREE HITCH-RIGHETTI HIGH WARRIORS

Coach Hitch has done an amazing job building the Warriors into a tremendous basketball program. The Warriors finished the year with a 14-3 record and Division 1 Section Champions.

PAG METER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
JAZMINE SOTO-SENIOR-STRATHMORE SPARTANS

What a career Jaz had who will leave as the All-time Central Section Leading scorer with 3.331 points. The 4-peat PAGMETER All Star finished her amazing career winning the Division 5 Section Championship (Scored 42 points in the Championship game) also helped the Spartans win the Division 6 State Championship (Scored another 42 points). Jaz led the Section this year in scoring with a 31 ppg along with 6 rebounds and 6 steals per game. Next stop will be playing at Holy Names in Oakland.

PAG METER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
DANYELL BOOKER-SENIOR-ROOSEVELT ROUGH RIDERS

The 4-year starter finished her fantastic career at Roosevelt winning a State Championship and scoring 23 points in the win over South Pasadena. Danyell is a 3-sport star in Softball and throwing the Shot-Put. Danyell is one of the best defensive players in the Central Section and scored 18 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals per game. Danyell was the Roosevelt B’nai B’rith winner and some college will be getting a good one including her 3.8 GPA.

PAGMETER’S BEST TWO SPORT PLAYER OF THE YEAR
MORGAN TRIGUIERO-SOPHOMORE-CARUTHERS BLUE RAIDERS

Morgan did something that will NEVER happen again. The Two-Sport star was the West Sequoia League Offensive Player of the year in Basketball along with being First team All-league in Softball and remember both sports are played at the same time. Morgan was an outstanding pitcher who would pitch during the day, ice the arm after the game while getting ready to play basketball at night with one of the best teams in the state. Morgan was facing basketball teams that were fresh and plenty of the teams that Caruthers played did not play Two sports. Oh, by the way, Morgan did all this and had a 4.0 GPA in the classroom. Someday there will be a movie about what Morgan accomplished. The next 2 years will be an exciting time for the Blue Crew Ace and Basketball star!

PAG METER UNDERCLASSMEN OF THE YEAR
ETOYAH MONTGOMERY-SOPHOMORE-CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES/SJM PANTHERS

Etoyah is only a sophomore at 6’1, strong, fast, can shoot, plays great defense and helped lead the Golden Eagles to the Central Section Championship. Etoyah is being recruited by so many and has the makings to be an WNBA star someday. The next couple of years will be fun to watch.
Big News-Etoyah will be transferring to San Joaquin Memorial to play her junior and senior year.

MEADOW ROLAND-SOPHOMORE-MEMORIAL PANTHERS
A star is born, and Meadow will be one of the best in the state the next 2 years. Sky’s the limit for Meadow who can shoot the 3-pointer, post up (Love that she can post up because it is a dying art) drive hard to the basket, loves to mix it up for rebounds and plays great defense. Plenty of offers will be rolling in soon and leading the way are Fresno State and UNLV.

KILEY BUTCHERT-SENIOR-CLOVIS COUGARS
The TRAC All Star was the senior team leader on a young team. Kiley played outstanding on both ends of the floor and was the Tim Simons Character Award winner. Kiley is a 3-year starter and a 2-year captain (WOW!) Next stop will be attending Cal State San Marcos.

JENNA KURZ-SENIOR-YOSEMITE BADGERS

KACIE STOVER-JUNIOR-NIPOMO TITANS
The Titans got red hot in the second half of the season and won the Division 2 Section Championship. The Titans played a battle tested schedule and a big part of it was the junior All-Star who played great on both ends of the floor with 17 points, 9 rebounds per game average. Watchout for the Titans in 2021-2022 because they will be very good again.

ASHTYN ARNOLD-SENIOR-BUCHANAN BEARS
The TRAC All Star had one heck of a senior year. The Bears had more injuries than maybe any team in the state and the young Bears rode the back of their senior leader to win the Division 3 state Championship. Ashtyn was outstanding on both ends of the floor. In the State playoffs, Ashtyn averaged 29 points and 10 rebounds per game. Ashtyn leaves Buchanan with a state championship ring and joins the 1000 career points club. Next stop will be playing the Bellevue University Bruins.

  • The Corcoran Lady Panthers won the Division 6 State Championship not Strathmore.

  • I find the comments that you made about the San Joaquin Memorial team not playing, a pack of lies. It had nothing to do with one player not being able to play. Stop with the lies. I find it disgusting. A mother of two players… one that suffered a knee injury after the Sierra Pacific game and the other with a chronic illness. Oh, and the comments you made about the North, are just as disturbing.

    • You don’t find it distributing that an undefeated team decided not to play? I have been doing this for a long time and I find it very disturbing that a team quit. I’m a big San Joaquin Memorial fan in all sports and I’m so embarrassed for the girls basketball program and for you to try to justify it, is very disturbing to me and plenty from SJM. BTW I have gotten plenty of emails from SJM people and they think it sucks that they didn’t want to play in the playoffs.
As for the North, call it what you want but I feel bad for the student athletes being held hostage because a bunch of leftist administrators have zero back bone.

  • I fine it surprising that neither Porterville High School guards, Nesije Ortiz or Gracie Magana made your top 40 list.
