CHAMPIONSHIP FRIDAY NOTES

OFFICIALS
The Refs will again this week have a 7-man crew and some crews will be the same as last week and some crews will be different.
Some games had some issues and some games went smoothly. Fowler vs Mendota and Exeter vs Dos Palos had no issues according to the coaches.

GOOD NEWS-BAD NEWS WITH 7 MAN CREWS
GOOD NEWS-With a 7 man crew it covers much more of the field especially with spread teams. When the officials work together, it’s a thing of beauty.

BAD NEWS-Some crews have never worked together because they come from all over the Central Section. The crews have worked all year long with a 5 man crew. The crews are split up from all over the section. Some crews might have 3 white hats who ran their own crews all year long and now on the same crew Friday and some might want to be the guy! That means they will all want to outdo each other and that is BAD!
To all officials working Championship Friday, sometimes less is more. Bring your common sense personality hat to the game.
Enough with checking the knee pads and wrist bands. Every area is different. Let each team handle that. Refs have enough to worry about.

The Semi Finals had some crazy outcomes.
In the Clovis East-Clovis North game, a major issue arose with a Clovis North player head-butting a Clovis East player late in the game but the CE player got the penalty and pretty much killed any chance of CE coming back. Was it the right call? F&%K no it wasn’t. To all Refs, you better be 1000000% sure it’s the right call especially with the game on the line.

As you know the Torres Toros won the Division 4 semifinal game over Shafter 43-42.
This game has made the national news and not for the right reasons.
The CIF has decided that the Torres Toros will get the win even though the referees said it was no good throwing a pass to an ineligible receiver. It’s a rules call, and not a judgment call. This game was a tough one to win and a horrible way to lose.
On the extra point attempt, It was a bad snap, the holder scrambled and threw a pass to the wide open center which was an illegal receiver and was called good. The defense knew it wasn’t good because they knew the 10 times during the game including punting that No 3 was the long snapper and to not cover him. DUH
The refs walked off the field not knowing they blundered and then realized that the receiver was ineligible. The ref says they didn’t give Shafter the opportunity to “immediately protest the call on the field” so they could enforce it properly. Shafter coaches knew .1 second after the play that the receiver was ineligible and had a RB/WR number No 3 on.
The Game should have been ruled an incomplete pass. It’s a loss of down, penalty and game over. Shafter should be the winner. The CIF made the wrong call and it’s sad. ACCORDING TO THE RULES, THE OFFICIALS HAD THE AUTHORITY TO GO BACK ONTO THE FIELD AND MAKE THE CORRECT CALL! Shafter followed all the correct steps in the process to rectify the situation. The officials wanted to fix the mistake but the assistant CIF commissioner of the Central Section said they can not switch the call and that is 100% wrong. THE CIF BLUNDERED.

What’s crazy is, the CIF made up their mind after the game but let Shafter protest anyway and appeal the ruling so why wait until Sunday for a decision. What a waste of time.
A protest is when both sides come together with evidence and In this case it was indisputable evidence that the play was no good. DUH.
The Referees made the wrong call but did the right thing and said when huddling up after running off the field,” we made the wrong call and let both teams know that the play was no good.”
To the referee’s working the game, you made a wrong into a right and that’s all you can ask for from the officials. The Officials didn’t have to come back and do that. Plenty of officials would have kept on walking.

To the CIF, you simply blew it!
The commitment to excellence slogan went out the window and this could have been a great learning experience for everybody in doing the right thing. So much injustice everywhere…
Then they wonder why people lose faith in institutions and rules. It is still a learning experience…just in the wrong way. It teaches that if you break the rules, you can still be the champion. Does Character really count?
How many Coaches/ADs/Principals would have stepped up after hearing that their receiver was ineligible and said we didn’t deserve the win? Great show topic.

I would 100% agree with the call if the officials stayed with the bad call. You live with it and move on but that didn’t happen. The Officials corrected their blunder and made it right. Every game has bad calls. It is what it is, game over, If you don’t understand that then the terrorist win.
This is not about Torres, Shafter or any school. This is about right and wrong!
If the Officials felt threatened from the crowd in any way after the final play, then time means nothing when getting the call right. If the Refs felt threatened then EVERYTHING changes! Time doesn’t matter, especially with safety. We have all seen videos of Refs getting beat up after games but apparently everybody thinks it only happens somewhere else.

I hope what comes out of the abortion of a game is to make sure the Center/interior lineman has a non receiver number on if they are snapping the ball.

For the love of God, Officials, please talk it out before and after every tough call when it comes to controversial penalties (like in the CN vs CE game) that could cost a team big on touchdowns, pass interference…ect. Without replay review, Refs all should have some sort of communication devices with each other.

To the Torres Toros players, you now have a game to play and somehow you need to forget about the semifinals fiasco and get ready to play at Dos Palos.

The same Officials group that worked the Torres-Shafter game will be working the Wasco-Bishop Union Game. I bet they will be talking with each other much more in this game.

THE FUTURE OF OFFICIALS
Get ready for the future of Central Section High School football soon because there is going to be a HUGE PROBLEM when it comes to officiating. Some officials are getting older and have done a GREAT job for years but you are not seeing young officials signing up.
The money is not good enough for the young people to join. It’s that simple.
The PAGMETER is telling you now because soon it will be a major shit show with High School Officials. School districts in the future need to get ready to pay more because without officials, you have no games.

THERE IS NO MORE VALLEY CHAMPIONSHIPS or CHAMPIONS

THANK YOU SO MUCH for finally getting it because almost everybody is now calling it a Division Section Championship or Central Section Championship. In the big boy of Division 1 is the CENTRAL SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION.
It has taken the PAGMETER 5 plus years to educate our section.
To the few that haven’t gotten the memo…
There is NO MORE VALLEY CHAMPIONSHIPS. Why? They are now SECTION CHAMPIONSHIPS because with the Central Coast teams joining the CS that live by ocean and I’m no oceanolgist, but the end of the earth isn’t in a valley. It’s disrespectful when it’s called a valley championship.
We have now 130 schools in the Central Section and a Section Champion is much bigger and better than a valley champion.

GAME ON

CHAMPIONSHIP FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS FINAL SCORES

DIVISION 1
FOR THE CENTRAL SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP
CENTRAL GRIZZLIES (10-4) vs CLOVIS NORTH BRONCOS (13-0)

HEAD COACHES
Grizzlies Kyle Biggs in his 9th year and Broncos Mike Jacot in his 5th year.
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The Grizzlies have won a Central Section Championship in 2017, 2018, and 2019
The Broncos won their first and only Central Section Championship in 2012 and won a Division 2 Title in 2011.

SEMIFINAL RESULTS
The Grizzlies beat the Liberty Patriots 35-21. Red hot QB David Marquez scored a TD and went 23-38 for 317 yards and 3 TD passes. WR Braylen Hall was unstoppable catching 7 footballs for 196 yards and 2 TDs. EJ Morgan also caught a TD pass. Brandon Smith scored on a rushing TD.
The Broncos beat the Clovis East T Wolves 34-28. The Broncos are 2-0 vs the T Wolves. Junior RB Jackson Cinfel rushed for 255 yards and scored 2 TDs including 75 & 86 yard runs. Junior Mckay Madsen rushed for 95 yards. Senior QB Mario Cosma scored a TD, went 4-5 passing and threw 2 TD passes each to senior Vincent Cordoba caught a 25 yarder and Jacob Couch caught a 6 yard TD. Leading the D was LB Domenic Mercurio who had 12 tackles and a sack.
T Wolves junior QB Ty Miller rushed for 121 yards, scored a TD, threw for 264 yards and 3 TDs.
The Broncos had a 28-0 lead and on their way to a possible running clock but for some reason the Broncos took the foot off the gas and the T Wolves came storming back and had the potential of winning until the official threw a late ugly penalty flag on CE and the chance of winning came to an end. Give big credit to the T Wolves because they came into the semifinals not prepared and never gave up.

The X FACTOR, can the Grizzlies slow down the physical Broncos running attack? Can the Broncos defense slow down the smoking hot Grizzlies passing attack. Those are 2 HUGE X factors.

THE PAG FACTOR, this is a rematch from week 11 and the Broncos beat the Grizzlies 27-20. The game looks like it was close because of the score but this was a close blow out. The Broncos had it in hand all night long and felt threatened. The Grizzlies scored a real late TD.
The Broncos are a team that doesn’t put on a killer attitude for 48 minutes and are still 12-0. Yes the Broncos are the best team in the Central Section and it’s not close but if you let Kyle Biggs and his Grizzlies in the 4th quarter hang around, watch out.
The Grizzlies are the best 2nd half team in the Central Section and that means you better be up big over the Grizzlies at the half because the Grizzlies play lights out in the 2nd half.
The Broncos are the opposite, they start fast and go for the knockout in the first half. CE looked confused with the Broncos power running game with juniors Cinfel, Madsen, senior Andrew Chavez and the best O-line in the Central Section until they trailed 28-0.
The Grizzlies defensive Coaching staff will be ready with a game plan.

For the Grizzlies to win. They have to gamble and put pressure on the Broncos running game. Look for the Grizzlies to put outside pressure and force the Grizzlies to throw the ball. There is no question that Broncos QB Cosma can throw with anybody but he only threw 5 passes and completed 4 in the win over CE. If Cosma only throws 5 passes that means the Grizzlies are getting beat up on the line of scrimmage.
The Grizzlies passing attack has been playing at a high level ever since about week 7. QB Marquez has been so dangerous to contain and teams have been struggling slowing down the tremendous receivers of Hall who has caught 80 footballs, scored 17 TDs, Junior WR Daylon Scott, and dangerous Noel Felix III. The Grizzlies can’t afford to turn the ball over and they must start fast to win. The Broncos are never behind so nobody knows what kind of team the Broncos are if that happens.

For the Broncos to win is FINISH and play solid for 48 minutes. If the Broncos can control the line of scrimmage containing QB Marquez then the Broncos will win.
The Broncos need to start fast like they have done in 12 straight games along with coming out strong after halftime. The Broncos know they can dominate with the running game and probably expect some outside pressure like the T Wolves did in the 2nd half of last week. There’s very few QBs in our section who run a great play action pass but the best is Mario Cosma. It’s a thing of beauty. For some reason QB coaches don’t teach it but the Broncos sure do. Play-action/Bootleg is a great weapon especially with 11 defensive players trying to get a beat on the run game.
Until a team can slow down the Broncos running attack, you have to take the Broncos.
PAGMETER PREDICTION BRONCOS 35 GRIZZLIES 28 (FINAL BRONCOS 24 GRIZZLIES 14)

STATE PLAYOFFS
The Broncos could be playing in the Nor Cal Division 1-AA bracket and possibly vs De La Salle.

DIVISION 2

LEMOORE TIGERS (10-4) at CVC CAVALIERS (12-1)
HEAD COACHES Tigers Rich Tuman in his 4th year and Cavaliers Mason Hughes in his 15th year.
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The Tigers are the defending Division 2 Section Champions and that’s the first Championship in school history.
The Cavaliers have won a Section Championship in 1999, 2003, 04, 05, 18, and 2021.

THE SEMIFINAL RESULTS
The Tigers beat the Centennial Golden Hawks 20-14. The defense played a very good game. Senior Kobe Green caught a TD pass and had a big INT. RB Dameion Hernandez scored a big TD.
The Cavaliers beat the Tulare Union Tribe 43-42. The Caves were down 34-13 at the half with 5 turnovers. Thanks to the Tribe not knowing how to run the clock out and the Cavaliers had a tremendous 2nd half. Senior RB Bryson Donelson rushed for 281 yards and scored 3 TDs including the game winner and 2 point conversion.

THE X FACTOR, this is the outstanding Cavaliers offense vs the Tigers outstanding defense. Can the Cavaliers defense slow down the Tigers offense? Can the Tigers front seven slow down Donelson and the running game? The Cavaliers big X factor could be senior QB Brent Kroeze who has thrown for 2,383 yards and 30 TDs. If Brent goes off..game over.

THE PAG FACTOR, this is a rematch from last year’s Championship game and the Tigers beat the Cavaliers 62-46. Donelson rushed for 261 yards and scored 3 TDs.
The Tigers offense graduated plenty of the stars but 9 starters return on D and the Tigers defense is very physical up front.

Tigers junior QB Aiden Mcdaniel left the game and the original starter, senior Johnny Cunha finished the game.
For the Tigers to repeat as Champions, they must have a tremendous night on offense. The Tigers defense is so good and they will hold their own with senior linebacker Jace Silva, stud senior nose guard Trevon Gaffney, and DB Kobe Green who has 9 interceptions.
The Cavaliers in the first half of last week got down big because of 5 turnovers. That can’t happen this week because the Tigers know how to work the clock.
This game will be very physical on the line of scrimmage. The Tigers can’t have Donelson run wild who is now over 2,000 yards for the year.
PAGMETER PREDICTION CAVALIERS 33 TIGERS 30 (FINAL CAVALIERS 27 TIGERS 26)

STATE PLAYOFFS
Looks like the winner could be in the Southern Section Division 2-A State Playoff and it could be playing St Augustine of San Diego

DIVISION 3

Mission Oak Hawks QB Daniel Gonzalez and RB Kenny Jackson

KERMAN LIONS (8-6) vs MISSION OAK HAWKS (9-5)
HEAD COACHES
Lions Damon Jenkins in his 2nd year and Marty Martin in his 2nd year.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
Somebody will be winning their first Section Championship in school history. In 2013 the Hawks lost to Bakersfield Christian in the D4 Section title game
SEMIFINAL RESULTS
The Lions beat the Mission Prep Royals 20-14 in overtime. The Lions defense played outstanding. The Royals ran a kickoff back for a TD and the Lions fumbled at the Royals 1 yard line. If not for that the Lions D would have had a shutout. Adam Delgado caught the overtime 5 yard TD pass from sophomore QB Adrian Torres. Torres went 16-26 for 271 yards and 3 TDs. Dalagdo caught 7 footballs for 156 yards and 3 TD. The Royals did a nice job slowing the run game down so the Lions took to the air.
The Hawks beat the Washington Union Panthers 39-25. Senior RB Kenny Jackson rushed for 107 yards and scored a TD. Senior QB Daniel Gonzalez scored 2 TDs and threw a TD pass to senior Cameron Azevedo who also had 2 interceptions of defense.

THE X FACTOR, can the Lions defense slow down the speedy Hawks offense. The Hawks defense will give up some points but will score plenty.
The Lions need a huge night with no turnovers to win their first Section Championship.

THE PAG FACTOR, both coaches have done such a great job and both in their 2nd year. The Lions have to be able to pound the ball with junior RB Julien Velez and slow the game down.
Both teams are playing their best football at the right time. The Lions have won 5 straight games and the Hawks have won 4 straight games.
PAGMETER PREDICTION HAWKS 34 LIONS 27
(FINAL HAWKS 34 LIONS 14)

STATE PLAYOFFS
The winner could be playing in the Southern Section Division 4-AA and maybe Jurupa Hills.

DIVISION 4

TORRES TOROS (11-3) at DOS PALOS BRONCOS (11-2)
HEAD COACHES
Toros Joe Marquez in his 3rd year and Broncos Rob Calvert in his 7th year
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The Toros are playing in their first Section Championship game in school history.
The Broncos have won a Section Championship in 1936, 67, 69, 70, 75, 76, 81, 84, 97, 98, 99, 2000, 01, & 06.
SEMIFINAL RESULTS

As you all know the Toros beat the Shafter Generals 43-42 in a much disputed game. Senior Joseph Bass scored 4 TDs and was the snapper on the illegal catch. Senior QB Jose Soriano went 25-35 for 389 yards and 3 TD passes.
The Broncos beat the Exeter Monarchs 28-21. The defense made the big stops in the 2nd half especially late in the game when the Monarchs were threatening. Just like in the Torres-Shafter game, the Broncos had a bad snap and it turned out to be the winning TD with 7 minutes to go and the D did the rest. . Senior Drake Hennagan reacted quickly, turning from holder to QB and finding sophomore WR Anthony Del Rio in the back of the end zone and the game winning TD. If you are wondering, Del Rio was a legal receiver wearing No 25. Senior QB Peyton Van Worth threw 2 TD passes each to sophomore Andre Flores (51 yards) and sophomore Jesus Bon (23 yards) and Bon also returned a kickoff 55 yards for a TD.

THE X FACTOR, It didn’t matter who won in the Torres-Shafter game, they were going to be the favored. The top side of the bracket was a killer.
Can the Broncos slow down the Toros’ physical offensive attack? Senior QB Van Worth and the Broncos offense will need a huge night. Van Worth has been playing all year with a labrum injury and every time he throws the football it hurts!!

THE PAG FACTOR, even though this is the D4 Section Championship, the Toros easily could come in with a Shafter hangover because with all the drama and playing a heart-wrenching game, it can drain you. The Toros senior leaders will need to step up.
PAGMETER PREDICTION TOROS 37 BRONCOS 30
(FINAL TOROS 69 BRONCOS 14)

STATE PLAYOFFS
The winner could be playing in the Northern Section D4-A State Playoffs

DIVISION 5

WASCO TIGERS (8-5) at BISHOP UNION BRONCOS (11-2)
HEAD COACHES
Tigers Chad Martinez in his 7th year and Broncos Arnie Palu in his 8th year
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The Tigers have won a Section Championship in 1952 and 2012
The Broncos won a Division 6 Section Championship in 2019
SEMIFINAL RESULTS

The Tigers beat the Liberty Hawks 27-10. The defense played an outstanding game.
The Broncos beat the Morro Bay Pirates 28-26. Austin Powell rushed for 134 yards and scored 2 TDs. Malachi Orrick caught 2 TDs from QB Boden St Marie. The Broncos defense made the big plays down the stretch.
THE X FACTOR, can the Broncos defense slow down the Tigers running game. The Tigers hate throwing the football.
THE PAG FACTOR, just 3 years ago in this crazy playoff format, the Tigers were undefeated and playing in the Division 3 playoffs. Now the Tigers with 1,500 students are playing at Bishop with 600.
If the Broncos can pull it off this could be the last time you might see a small school win a championship again.
The Tigers have played a much tougher schedule but playing in Bishop won’t be easy.
The same Officials group that worked the Torres-Shafter game will be working this game. I will bet this group will be communicating much better in this game.
PAGMETER PREDICTION BRONCOS 27 TIGERS 25 (FINAL BRONCOS 42 TIGERS 41)

STATE PLAYOFFS
The winner could be playing in the Southern Section Division 6-A playoffs

DIVISION 6

STRATHMORE SPARTANS (10-4) at MENDOTA AZTECS (7-7)
HEAD COACHES
Spartans Jeromy Blackwell in his 23rd year and Aztecs Beto Mejia in his 13th year
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The Spartans have won a Section Championship in 1992, 98, 2009, 16, 2017 (State Champions) and 2018
The Aztecs have won in 2011, 12, 16 and are the 2022 defending D6 Section Champions.
SEMIFINAL RESULTS
The Spartans beat the Arvin Bears 28-21. Senior Jacob Poole rushed for 215 yards and scored 2 TDs. Junior Abee Hernandez returned a kickoff for a TD and made 13 tackles on defense. Senior QB Bryson Bias hit sophomore Isaiah Colunga on a 29 yard TD pass.
The Aztecs beat the Fowler Redcats 56-44. Junior Jesse Rodriguez rushed for 201 yards and scored 2 TDs. Senior Donnie Munoz rushed for 257 yards and scored 3 TDs. Sophomore Hawk Garcia scored on a rushing TD, junior QB Ryan Preciado scored a TD and threw a TD pass to junior TE Daniel Morales.

The X FACTOR, this game comes down to the defensive side of the ball. Can the Aztecs slow down Poole? Look for Poole to get 30 plus carries.
Can the Spartans slow down Rodriguez and Monoz? Which QB can make the big time throw when it’s clutch time? The Spartans 6’3 TE Colunga could be big in the red zone.

THE PAG FACTOR: The Aztecs and Spartans met in week 3 at Strathmore and the Aztecs shutout the Spartans 20-0. Aztecs Rodriguez rushed for 152 yards and scored 2 TDs. Spartans Poole rushed for 40 yards.
The two powerhouse D5 teams figured out a way to play for the D6 Championship and bravo to both of them. Both teams are playing their best football at the right time of the year. This game is so even and a tough call. This will be a very physical game and both teams will leave it all out on the field. Both teams love when the PAGMETER picks against them. The Aztecs have the edge playing at home.
PAGMETER PREDICTION AZTECS 28 SPARTANS 25
(FINAL AZTECS 14 SPARTANS 7)

STATE PLAYOFFS
The Winner could be playing in the Southern Section D7-A State playoffs. Whoever wins on Friday will have a great chance at winning the State Championship.
