PAGMETER BASEBALL ALL CENTRAL SECTION ALL STAR TEAM 2023
PAGMETER TEAM OF THE YEAR
KINGSBURG VIKINGS
The year started strong for the Division 3 Section Champion Vikings winning the Clovis tournament which was HUGE. A division 4 base team winning a Division 1 tournament told the rest of the Central Section that the Vikings were the real deal. The Vikings never slowed down, winning the Tri-County League along with beating Dos Palos in the Division 3 Section Championship game 7-5 and finished the year at 28-6.
PAGMETER SMALL SCHOOL TEAMS OF THE YEAR
LIBERTY MADERA HAWKS
What a story from the team off Ave 12 in Madera. The division 5 based Hawks won the Division 4 Section Championship and finished the year 26-7. Hey Central Section, the Hawks will be even better in 2024. With this silly playoff format we now have, the overachieving Hawks will probably get penalized and will have to move up into division 4 very soon and that means the Hawks with less than 600 students in the entire school will play in division 3. What this means is the overachievers will pay the price for a good baseball program and the underachievers will thrive in this playoff format. Most everybody is coming back from a very talented Hawks team.
PAGMETER PLAYER OF THE YEAR

JOEY VOLCHKO-Senior-REDWOOD RANGERS
This was a slam dunk pick for PagMeter Player of the year! Joey was one of the best pitchers in the state along with being a tough out at the plate. The Rangers ace went 7-2 with a 0.59 ERA, 134 K’s in 59 innings. At the plate he hit .442 with 38 RBI’s, 8 doubles, 3 Triples and hit 8 Home Runs. The 6-4 senior right-hander will go down as one of the best ever at Redwood and the next stop will be playing for the Stanford Cardinal.
PAGMETER PITCHER OF THE YEAR
TOBY TWIST-Senior-BAKERSFIELD CHRISTIAN EAGLES

One of the top lefty pitchers in the Country for the last 3 years going 22-2 and a career ERA of 0.99 with 293 Strikeouts. Toby helped the Eagles win the Division 2 Section Championship and this year he went 10-1 with a 1.46 ERA, 126 K’s in 76 innings. At the plate he hit .357 with 31 RBI’s, 9 doubles and hit 5 Homers. Next stop for the super lefty will be playing for the Oregon Ducks.
PAGMETER SLUGGER OF THE YEAR
TRENTON HERNANDEZ-Senior-CENTENNIAL GOLDEN HAWKS
Trenton was a huge part of the Golden Hawks winning the Central Section Championship with an outstanding senior year batting .390 with 10 home runs, 10 doubles, a 1.189 OPS and 36 RBIs. Trenton came up big in so many situations all year long.
PAGMETER UNDERCLASSMAN OF THE YEAR
JEROD “BUBBA” SMITH-Sophomore-FOWLER REDCATS

Get ready for Bubba to explode in baseball and football for the next 2 years. Bubba is also one of the best young Quarterbacks in the Central Section and in baseball, he hit .348 with 9 doubles, 2 triples, 24 RBIs, 3 Home Runs. On the hill, the Northwest Sequoia League MVP hard throwing 6’1 righthander went 8-4, 65 innings pitched with 94 K’s.
Others that were considered
TREY MORRIS-Sophomore-WASHINGTON UNION PANTHERS
TYLER O’TOOLE-Sophomore-BUCHANAN BEARS
JADYN HERNANDEZ-Sophomore-CENTENNIAL GOLDEN HAWKS
ASA MEDINA-Sophomore-HOOVER PATRIOTS
ERIK RICO-Sophomore-REDWOOD RANGERS
AUSTIN FINEGAN-Freshman-BUCHANAN BEARS
KELAN TURNER-Sophomore-CENTRAL VALLEY CHRISTIAN CAVALIERS
RAMON DIAZ-Freshman-FOOTHILL TROJANS
GABRIEL BORJA-Freshman-RIDGEVIEW WOLF PACK
PAGMETER SMALL SCHOOL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
MCGUIRE SMITH-Junior-LIBERTY MADERA HAWKS

One of the best junior outfielders/1B in the Central Section and helped lead the Hawks to a Division 4 Section Championship. McGuire hit .459, with 19 Doubles, 10 Triples, 4 Home runs and knocked in 37 runs. In the D4 Championship game, McGuire had a triple, Home Run and 3 big RBI’s. The super lefty was the Northwest Sequoia League MVP, already the all-time career hits leader in Liberty history with 141 and counting, gets it done in the classroom with 4.0 GPA, will come into 2024 as one of the best hitters in the Central Section. McGuire has committed to play at UC Riverside and the Highlanders are getting a good one.
PAGMETER COACH OF THE YEAR
DERICK KUHN-LIBERTY MADERA HAWKS

Liberty Madera took a chance on a very young coach 4 years ago and it has paid off. Athletic Director Mike Nolte saw this young coach and hired him without any head coaching experience and now Derick is one of the best young coaches in the state.
The overachieving baseball player who graduated from Central High School in 2015, played 4 years for the Simpson University RedHawks. Derick was an All Conference infielding defensive machine that hit .344 before starting his Coaching career.
Derick started his first year during the corrupt PLANdemic and has been building a powerhouse with the Hawks baseball program ever since. In 2022, the Hawks lost in the Division 4 Section Championship game to a division 3 team and this year the Hawks won it all, winning the Division 4 Section Championship beating Immanuel. The division 5 based Hawks finished the year at 26-7 and get ready for another big year for the Hawks because almost everybody is coming back. Liberty Madera has under 600 students in the entire school and has already beaten teams like Clovis East, Edison, Kerman, Frontier and Righetti High so look for the overachieving Hawks to move up in divisions soon with this crazy playoff format.
Others that were considered;
Juan Gamez from the Division 6 Section Champions
Tigers first 20 game win season in 8 years in his 3rd year Coaching with a very young team. This was the first Section Championship in 50 years for the Tigers. Coach did it without a practice bullpen, no batting cages and as of right now, it will be the same for a while with the baseball facility.
.
Dan Durham from the Centennial Golden Hawks
The No 9 seed Golden Hawks beat the No 8 seed Madera on the road, beat the No 1 seed Bullard on the road, beat the No 4 seed Redwood on the road and beat the No 2 seed Buchanan in the Championship. That is a heck of a run!
Mark Ratekin from the Bakersfield Christian Eagles
By far the best team in school history winning the Division 2 Section Championship and could have battled for the Central Section Championship.
Alex Gutierrez from the Division 5 Section Champions Firebaugh Eagles
The Eagles played perfect in this silly playoff format. For any small team wondering how to win a championship, talk with Coach Gutierrez because it was text-book.
Jim Cranford from the Division 3 Section Champion Kingsburg Vikings
Coach wanted his Vikings challenged early in the year so the Vikings entered the Clovis division 1 baseball tournament and won the tournament which was huge for the D4 based team. The Vikings will be good again this year and you better bring your A game when you play the Kingsburg Vikings
Davey Jones from the Hoover Patriots
In the last 3 years the Patriots had maybe 11 players on the entire roster. Hoover used to be a very good baseball program but turned into a Babe Ruth program. Coach Jones shows up and brings in plenty of love and getting the community involved, raising money and all of that is not easy. The Patriots had a very good year going 16-11 overall and 11-3 in the NYL. Job well done.
PAGMETER PLAY OF THE YEAR

This play could be the biggest play in the last 10 years.
Let’s set it up for you…Central Section Championship game. The underdogs Centennial Golden Hawks vs the 7 time Central Section Champion Buchanan Bears.
Top of the 7th inning and the Bears are getting ready to close it out. The Bears are leading 3-1 but two hit batters put a couple of runners on for the G Hawks with 2 outs. Up comes junior TRISTAN WATSON. With a 3-1 count, Tristan got his pitch and crushed a 3-run homer and the old Rawhide Park in Visalia went crazy! The Underdogs pull off a huge win and the G Hawks are your Central Section 2023 Champions!

When you are one of the top power hitters on a team that struggles hitting, it’s not easy and very frustrating. Every team’s game plan was to pitch the big guy carefully and when you are aggressive, you will hit pitches that you shouldn’t be swinging at. Munster walked 37 times and hit.364 with 5 doubles, and 7 Home Runs. If CW could actually hit, just think how many Home Runs Cayden would have hit! Next stop will be playing at Fresno State.

TYLER PATRICK-Junior-CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES
TP is one of the top pitchers along with being one of the top quarterbacks in the Central Section. CW team batting average was barely over .200 and Tyler alway pitched against the top teams. It had to be so frustrating pitching for a Golden Eagles team knowing they couldn’t score many runs. Look for a monster senior year for TP in football and in baseball.
