PAG METER NOTES
2020-2021 had some great stories especially after getting to play when the world ended last year.
The good stories.
**It was a tremendous year for the Central Section Champion St Joseph Knights and winning their first Central Section Championship in school history. The Knights had a tremendous senior led team.
**The Bullard Knights are the Division 1 Section Champions, the 4th straight Section Championship Game appearance and 6th in the last 8 years
**The Roosevelt Rough Riders got hot in the 2nd half of the season and won the Division 2 Section Championship.
**The Bakersfield Christian Eagles are the back-to-back Division 3 section champions, and they did it with a tremendous team effort.
**The Kingsburg Vikings went coast to coast to win the Division 4 section championship along with winning the Division 5 state championship. Colby Charles with the game winning 3-pointer at the horn beating Washington Union 62-59 in the state championship game.
**The Fowler Redcats went 18-1 in winning the Division 5 section championship for the first time since 1916 and the Redcats took care of business and won the Division 6 state championship.
Now for the not so good stories of 2020-2021
**Let us start with the Yosemite administration canceling a playoff game during the warmups. Yosemite was warming up to play Sierra Pacific and the nurse came in and said one of the Badger players had tested positive and even though the test turned out to be wrong, game off, season over. The Yosemite administration owes the players and coaching staff a huge apology.
**The Liberty Patriots/Independence Falcons with outstanding teams had to shut it down before the playoffs started because of the silly and stupid testing.
**Outstanding Kerman Lions basketball coach Tim Hurt must stop coaching his Lions team because the Kerman administration did not have the balls to take care of their coach who coached almost 8 years, with 132 wins, 4 league titles, 2018 section championship with 3 state appearances. Coach Hurt is being replaced by a teacher with a girls basketball career record of 8-6 and zero boys basketball experience. I wish I was making this up. Coach Hurt does not teach on campus and since he does not teach, they had to open the job up. By the way, the Lions barley had a basketball program before former Kerman Lions graduate and All Star/Hall of Famer Tim Hurt showed up. BAD MOVE KERMAN!

SPECIAL AWARDS
PAG METER TEAM OF THE YEAR
FOWLER REDCATS
This was the Redcats first section championship since 1916. This was no fluke because the Redcats were so close at winning it all last year. The Redcats also won the Division 6-AA State Championship and finished the year at 18-1. This was a fun team to watch because they played the game the right way!
PAG METER PLAYER OF THE YEAR
SAMUEL BAZUNGA-SENIOR- ST JOSEPH KNIGHTS
It was fun watching big Sam play because the dominant post player is a dinosaur in today’s game with everybody wanting to shoot the 3-pointer. It is very simple; the Knights do not win it all without the big man in the middle at both ends of the floor. Big Sam opened shots up for everybody else on the floor because teams had to figure out how to slow him down. Sam had the hat-trick with being physical, strong, and athletic. Sam did so much more than just scoring 14 points along with 8 rebounds per game. The next stop will be playing at Hawaii Pacific University.
PAG METER SMALL SCHOOL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
AMNEET BASARA, SENIOR, FOWLER REDCATS
Amneet will go down as the best Fowler Redcat to ever play in school history. He did it all with an inside game, tremendous defense and had a great jump shot. Amneet was a gamer and was always clutch for the state champion Redcats and the next stop will be playing for the Reedley Tigers.
PAG METER COACH OF THE YEAR
ALFONSO ALVARDO-FOWLER REDCATS
The Fowler Redcats are the Division 5 section champions and the Division 6 state champions. The Redcats were so well coached and fundamentally sound. For all the young coaches out there, this was the team to watch and learn from. The Redcats went 18-1 and I look forward to seeing the 2021 Championship team going up on the banner inside the Gym.
PAG METER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
COLE ANDERSON-SENIOR-CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES
This was an easy pick for offensive player of the year since Cole will go down as the best pure shooter in Central Section history. Cole finished his outstanding career scoring 2,730 points and just 70 points short of the all-time Central Section record. It would have been a slam dunk that Cole would have the scoring record if the Golden Eagles played a regular schedule.
Cole will leave Clovis West as the all-time schools leading scorer, the TRAC all-time leading scorer, the all-time 3-point shooting Central Section king with 464 3-pointers made, 4 straight TRAC Most Valuable player awards and a 4-time PAGMETER All Star. Cole did all this game after game when every team he went against did everything they could to stop him.
Next stop, Cole will be wearing No 20 for the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos.
PAG METER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
AK OKEREKE-SENIOR-CLOVIS NORTH BRONCOS
Okereke will go down as one of the best to ever play at Clovis North. Okereke was the Broncos leader on both ends of the floor. The Clovis North Student Athlete of the year averaged 23 points, 9 rebounds per game and a force on defense. Okereke is undecided where he will play next year and some school will be getting a good one along with his 4.6 GPA.
PAGMETER’S BEST TWO SPORT PLAYER
AARON BLANCAS-SENIOR-SELMA BEARS
Aaron is easily one of the best basketball and football players in the Central Section. The Selma Bears Student Athlete of the year averaged 25 points, 8 rebounds per game and nobody out worked Aaron. Aaron was a PAGMETER back-to-back All Star in football/basketball and will go down as the best 2-sport Selma Bears student athlete in school history. Next stop will be playing football at Fresno City.
PAG METER UNDERCLASSMEN OF THE YEAR
CONNOR AMUNDSEN-FRESHMEN-CLOVIS NORTH BRONCOS
A star is born with Connor who will only get better and better every game he plays. The TRAC All Star can shoot from anywhere on the court and is one of the best passers at point guard already in the Central Section. Go google the Hall of Fame NBA point guard John Stockton because that’s how Connor Amundsen plays with his court leadership of handling the basketball. Connor is going to be fun to watch the next 3 years.
PAG METER SWEET 16 ALL CENTRAL SECTION ALL STARS
JOSEPH HUNTER-JUNIOR-MEMORIAL PANTHERS
One the most talented juniors in the Country and his senior year will be fantastic with every college in the land watching. The Back-to-Back PAGMETER All Star averaged 24 ppg and was a finalist for Gatorade state player of the year. Jo Jo is the leader in the club house for PAGMETER 2021-2022 player of the year. Right now, Fresno State could be in the lead in the recruiting war so stay tuned on that.
OMARION THOMAS-MARSHALL-SENIOR-BULLARD KNIGHTS
Boy did Omarion get hot at the right time for the Knights who went on to win the Division 1 Section Championship. The Back-to-Back PAGMETER All Star was the team leader on a very young Knights team. Omarion averaged 22 ppg and the next stop will be De Anza College.
JINCHO RIVERA- ST JOSEPH KNIGHTS
The Back-to-Back PAGMETER All Star helped the Knights win their first Central Section Championship in school history. Jincho was the leader on the floor on both sides of the court who can score from anywhere. The future Chicago State star averaged 16.5 points per and 9 rebounds per game.
MIKE DAVIS JR-SOPHOMORE-MEMORIAL PANTHERS
By the time this 6’7 power forward is a senior, he will be one of the best in the state. Mike is very strong and tough in the middle with great touch on his jump shot. Plenty of division 1 colleges are on his radar already. Mike averaged 16 points, 9 rebounds per game and the Panthers will be very good the next 2 years with Mike Davis Jr leading the way.
CAMERON BROWN, JUNIOR, INDEPENDENCE FALCONS
A star is born for this junior who can do it all. The Falcons got a raw deal this year because of the stupid flu testing and the Falcons would have battled for the Division 2 Section Championship. Cameron averaged 19 ppg, will be one of the best players in the state in 2022 and look for the Falcons to be the leader in the club house to win it all.
SETH MARANTOS-SENIOR-BAKERSFIELD CHRISTIAN EAGLES
Here is one of the top point guards that teams had trouble slowing down because he can do it all. The Back-to-Back PAGMETER All Star will leave BC with two Division 3 section champion rings and a state championship. Marantos averaged 14 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals per game and next stop will be playing at Fresno Pacific University and the Sunbirds are getting a good one!
AJ GEORGE-SENIOR-HOOVER PATRIOTS
AJ will go down as one of the best to ever play at Hoover. AJ broke the school record this year scoring 49 points in a game. He can shoot the 3-pointer, can drive to the hoop and is tough to guard. The NYL Player of the year averaged 22 points and 8 rebounds per game. Next stop will be playing at Long Beach State.
QIANT MYERS-SENIOR-ROOSEVELT ROUGH RIDERS
If the PAGMETER had the team comes first award, Qiant Myers is your winner. Myers plays like Magic Johnson because he loves to pass the ball first with tremendous team ball. Myers was the best playmaker in the state and the Division 2 section champions got hot because of it. Myers averaged 14 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds per game and the next stop will be playing at Western Oregon University.
JADEN GERON-SENIOR-SAN JOAQUIN MEMORIAL-PANTHERS
The Back-to-Back PAGMETER All Star loves playing in the big game. Jaden was a huge part of turning the Panthers into a powerhouse the last 4 years and will leave with two Division 2 Section Championships rings and a Central Section Championship ring. At 6’8 Jaden is so smooth and always in control on both sides of the court. Jaden is a tremendous shooter with a great touch, can create his own shot driving to the basket and can get inside and bang it for the tough rebound. Next stop will be playing at Rice University.
NATHAN TOWSLEY-SENIOR-KINGSBURG VIKINGS
The Back-to-Back PAGMETER All Star will go down as one of the best to ever play in Kingsburg. Nathan is a winner, and he goes out strong leaving Kingsburg with two straight Division 4 Section Championship rings along with a State Championship ring. Towsley averaged 15 points, 7 rebounds per game, can shoot lights out and bang inside. The next stop will be playing for the Reedley Tigers. The Tigers are getting a good one.
CEDRIC COWARD-SENIOR-CENTRAL GRIZZLIES
The Back-to-Back PAGMETER All Star is the Kevin Durant of the Central Section. He can shoot the 3-pointer, rebound, battle inside, block shots and play great defense. The TRAC All Star was the Grizzlies go to player who averaged 17 ppg and the next stop will be playing at Willamette University.
JAMES PRESCOTT III-SENIOR-SAN JOAQUIN MEMORIAL PANTHERS
Prescott moved into the area this year and the Panthers were so happy he picked SJM because he did it all at guard. JP was quick off the dribble, can shoot the 3-pointer just as good as anybody and passes the ball just as good as anybody. James was a big reason why the Panthers were so successful. James averaged 12 points, 5 assist per game and next stop will be playing at Vision Academy in New York.
HOLDEN EAMES-SENIOR-YOSEMITE BADGERS
Holden had a fantastic Badgers career, and the legendary Eames family will be proud of baby brother Holden. The Eames family will go down as the greatest athletic family in Yosemite history. Brothers Cannon and Tristan both were star athletes in everything at YHS. Sister Jensen was a 4-year star in basketball and Pops was the former legend football coach. Holden was the Week 3 PAGMETER/Boston House of Pizza Player of the week scoring 51 points in a win and breaking the school record. Little brother Holden led the Central Section in scoring with 28 points per game, a tremendous 4.0 GPA and the next stop will be playing for the Reedley Tigers.
The tough way to end Holden’s career was the start of the playoffs. Yosemite was warming up to play Sierra Pacific and the nurse came in and said one of Badger players had tested positive and even though the test turned out to be wrong, game off, season over. The Yosemite administration owes the players and coaching staff a huge apology.
BROCK BATTEN-SENIOR-LIBERTY PATRIOTS
Brock is one of the best 3-point shooters in the Central Section and in fact he was still so dangerous from way out past the 3-point line. The Patriots team leader was outstanding on both ends of the floor averaging 25 ppg.
JALEN DOUGLAS-SENIOR-SAN JOAQUIN MEMORIAL PANTHERS
The Back-to-Back PAGMETER All Star will go down as one of the best defensive players in school history and that is saying a lot. Douglas helped the Panthers win their first Central Section Championship in school history in 2019 with amazing defense. JD’s job was to take the best offensive player from the other team out of the game and boom game over. The Panthers will miss this guards tenacity on and off the court in the years to come.
ORION TOMLINSON-JUNIOR-FRESNO CHRISTIAN EAGLESS
One of the hardest working guards in the Central Section and his senior year he will come in as one of best in the state. Orion averaged 27 points a game who can shoot the 3-pointer and dribble-drive to the basketball. His jump shot is sweet! Plenty of colleges now have this All Star on their radar.
DAREN SOSA-SENIOR-NIPOMO TITANS
Daren is All-time leading scorer in Nipomo school history with 1,434 career points. The Ocean league MVP was dangerous from anywhere on the floor. Daren averaged 18ppg and helped the Titans get to the Division 3 Championship game.
