WSL Athletics Week 3 Review

WSL Athletics Week 3 Review: Down goes the Broncos, Firebaugh escapes with a slim win at Roosevelt Week 4 Preview: Eagles clash with Caruthers, Can Mendota get back on track after the bye week?

Firebaugh Eagles, Last Week: 7-6 win at Roosevelt, Week 4 Rank, Maxpreps: 10th in D-5, The Pagmeter: 5th in D-5. Next: 9/13 vs. Caruthers Blue Raiders Firebaugh came away with another close win last week on Thursday Night against Roosevelt at Sunnyside Stadium and move to 2-1 on the year and tied with Dos Palos atop the WSL. Firebaugh’s last two wins have been both by close margins and on the road so it seems the Eagles can travel well so far and have already put their opening week loss to Liberty-Madera Ranchos in the rearview. They come back home to host the Blue Raiders over Caruthers as it will be the 17th meeting since 2004 according to Maxpreps, Caruthers leads the series 10-6 and are currently on a 3-game win streak against the Eagles and have had some great games for far in the series including the 2017 Valley Title Game in which Caruthers won on a last Firebaugh fumble. Firebaugh’s last win against Caruthers was on the road back in2016 with the score 34-7. Can the Eagles fly home and end the streak? Or will the Blue Raiders invade and claim Eagles Stadium for their own? We’ll see Friday Night. Avenal Buccaneers, Last Week: 43-6 loss at Corcoran, Week 4 Rank, Maxpreps/

The Pagmeter: 23rd in Dvision 6. Next: 9/13 at Riverdale Cowboys Well it seems the dawn of the new era in Avenal is fading just as the ship fades into the sunset. Coach Camp and company have yet to earn a win this season and their offense has only scored 8pts while their defense has given up a WSL-leading 135pts which is only 22 more than Tranquillity who has given up 113. I have a bad feeling that unless Captain Camp and his crew can’t give this team a complete turnaround by season’s end. It be the end of the Camp Era before it really starts. Dos Palos Broncos, Last Week: 40-6 loss at Washington Union, Week 4 Rank, Maxpreps: 4th in D-5, The Pagmeter: 7th in D-5. Next: 9/20 vs. Chowchilla Tribe Well Dos Palos was coming into last week’s game riding on a momentum high after their thrilling wins against Los Banos and Roosevelt. But well they arrived to Easton and to Washington Union and got a hard and swift kick back to reality as the Panthers offense unloaded 40pts leading to a 40-6 win over Dos Palos. The Coach Calvert “Comeback/Redemption” Tour has hit a bump on the road but knowing him he will tell his boys “The game is done with and we just got to learn from the mistakes we made and get ready for Chowchilla in two weeks”

Dos Palos is entering their bye week as co-leaders of the WSL with Firebaugh with 2-1 records. Like the old saying goes “You just got to get up, Dust your shoulders off, And get back on the horse”. So I’m sure Coach Calvert and the Dos Palos Broncos will get back on the horse and their winning ways. Tranquillity Tigers, Last Week: 19-14 loss vs. Morro Bay, Week 4 Rank, Maxpreps: 24th in D-6, The Pagmeter: 22nd in D-6. Next: 9/13 vs. Minarets Mustangs
It had finally looked that maybe…just maybe Tranquillity would end their losing streak and earn their firstwin of 2019. That is till they ran into the Pirates of Morro Bay (Ocean League, Central Section) and it was close game throughout and Tranquillity held a slight lead. But then Morro Bay plundered through and would in the end extend their losing streak to 16 games with a 19-14 loss and will maybe look forward to the Minarets Mustangs and get a win on the road and finally end the streak that could go well into 700+ days.

Coalinga Horned Toads, Last Week: loss vs. McFarland 28-27, Week 4 Rank, Maxpreps: 18th in D-5, ThePagmeter: 19th in D-5. Next: 9/13 vs. Fresno Christian Eagles (8-Man) Coalinga has probably had enough of all these close losses with 2 out the 3 being by a total of 4 pts (vs. Orosi 31-28, vs. McFarland 28-27). And will come into their next game pissed off and ready to take it outon their next opponent which is The Fresno Christian Eagles who have dominated 8-man football these last few years but not much against full teams. Coalinga is a 22pt favorites but they have been mostly favored this year so Coalinga should act as if their the underdogs and keep on playing smashmouth football and finally earn their first win of 2019…or they may end up projected with a 2 or 3 win season.

Mendota Aztecs, Last Week: Bye Week, Week 4 Rank, Maxpreps: 19th in D-5, The Pagmeter: 16th in D-5.Next: 9/13 at Reedley Pirates Mendota has had a rough start these past few weeks. Leading McLane by 14 after the 3rd Quarter but blowing the lead and eventually losing in overtime in their season opener, Then had a close game to Liberty-Madera Ranchos but couldn’t capitalize on the turnovers from Liberty and lost that game 17-14. They’ve had two weeks to fix whatever needed to be fixed and change the personnel and scheme and to prepare for the long haul and it starts this week with their first of two games in Reedley. As they travel to face on the Reedley Pirates and then two weeks from now come back to Reedley this time against the Immanuel Eagles. Can the Aztecs rebound and start a turnaround? Or will flashes of the last two seasons come back again to haunt Mendota?
