The Grizzlies come in as the favorites again and they might just be better than last year. It’s hard to find holes on both sides of the ball with the Grizzlies. They do have plenty of new Grizzlies transferring in…..
Senior Trent Tompkins is the first QB in Central Grizzlies history to win a valley championship throwing for 3,624 yards with 37 touchdown passes, rushed for 504 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. The Gunslinger will have plenty of targets and leading the way will be junior Jeremiah Hunter and senior Tyrell Grayson and they are real good. Next year Jeremiah will be recruited by everybody!
The Grizzlies will come in with a four headed monster at running back and they will all play on defense at linebacker, The monsters are junior Tre Walker who transferred in from Roosevelt, sophomore Je’Kob Jones who runs just like Marshawn Lynch, junior Austin Bebout, who missed last year with a shoulder injury and Jr Sean Harmon who is very fast.
The O-line will be very good again and leading the way is Edison transfer junior Dwight DJ Tatum.
The defense will be real good with the four monsters at linebacker along with Edison transfer, 6’4-290, Jr Ricky Correia on the D-line, Edison transfer Thaiger Flowers, Tyrell Grayson and Noah Gonzales will lead the secondary.
The X factor the Grizzlies have the best QB in the section!

This is the team that has the potential to be playing on Championship Friday. The defending SWYL Champions come in with plenty of senior leadership.
The new QB will be Redwood transfer senior Hector Gonzales who last year threw for 2,133 yards with 23 TD passes.
The Patriots running attack will be outstanding with senior Sammy Stewart who is the best 2-way player in the valley. A 220 pounder will wear you down at running back and rip your head off at Linebacker. He rushed for 1,192 yards, scored 12 touchdowns and Also made 82 tackles at linebacker.
The Pates O-line will be very good with seniors Brycen Lindsey and Daniel Viveros who might be the strongest player in the valley and the state champion in the Shot Put. Both will also play on the D-line.
The receivers will be good with Connor Matzke (DB) and Hunter Riley (FS) who was invited to the Blue Grey all American game in Dallas. Hunter has the makings to be a star!
The defense should be good with senior Ryan Aguilar at middle linebacker along with Anthony Vilanueva at linebacker. The defense will be much faster this year.
The X factor will be so many Patriots playing both ways. It’s going to be hot and the Patriots play a tough schedule. Can they stay healthy for the SWYL play?

The Bears were so close last year losing in the championship game. The Bears did it with a powerful defense and a power running game. The Bears had the best offensive line in the valley.
The Bears will come in 2018 and the offensive line will be pretty new. The defense will not be as good as last year but the Bears are a very physical team. The D will get better each week.
Outstanding running back Jr Kendall Milton who has over 35 offers will be the featured back. To beat the Bears, every defense will be focusing on Milton.
Sr Jalen Cropper who transferred in from Sanger will play all over on both sides of the ball. Jalen is exciting with the football so look for the Bears to get JC the ball a lot. Another dangerous player is Slot/Safety Sr Brock Jones. Brock is always making big plays and is always around the ball. Leading the way on defense will be Sr Tanner Blount (SS), Michael Mertens (MLB), Sr Jalen Leggett (DE), and Jr Matt Merritt (DL)
Look for QB sophomore DJ Stevenson to take over at QB. DJ is one heck of an athlete and played on the Varsity basketball team last year as a freshmen. By the way…he is the son of Washington Union and NBA Star DeShawn Stevenson.

The X factor every year for the Drillers offense is the QB play and it could be dangerous with Sr Cameron Williams who has verbally committed to play at Washington University. If Cam can run the triple option offense to perfection then watch out for the Drillers. The Drillers are loaded with speed and in the backfield with be Sr Ceyontay Bell (LB), Sr Jacob Zeimet (LB), and Wesley Wilson (LB). The Drillers receivers are scary good with Sr Isaiah Jernagin, Jr Isaac Jernagin and Sr speedster Carl Jones who will play everywhere and has verbally committed to play at Colorado. Jones is so dangerous with the football.
The defense will be extremely fast and leading the way is middle linebacker Sr Adrian Moreno!
This Drillers have the makings to be playing on Championship night.

The Eagles are new to the Central Section and the Eagles have the makings to be real good.
The senior leader on both sides of the ball will be running back James Gilmet who rushed for 1,102 yards. Sr Steven Vargas will also be a force running the football weighing 220.
Senior QB Kadin Byrne comes in with a year of experience and that’s huge. Bryne can run and pass so the dual threat QB will be tough to defend.
Junior Jed Rantz (TE) will lead the defense. Leading the way upfront will be senior Kai Banks (OL/DL) and Diego Huitron.
The Eagles X factor will be the defensive side of the ball.

Last year the Cougars were the most beaten up team in the valley due to injuries. They didn’t have the numbers so each week was a journey.
The QB will be former Bullard Knight junior Isaiah Robles.
The running backs will run hard with juniors Johnny Johnson and Phoenix Jones.
The Wide receivers will be very good with Matt Sanchez, Reef Dove and Grant Lake.
The offensive line will be much better than last year and leading the way will be sophomore Tank Brown.
The defense will have some new names and leading the way will be senior Cristian Loera who set a school record last year with 12 interceptions and outstanding sophomore Keanu Williams who is 6’4, 275 lbs and becoming a monster on defense.
The X factor will be the QB play. For the Cougars to have a successful year, they will need a big year at QB. This team must stay healthy.

The Knights have the makings to be very good with a hard working bunch of Knights.
Bullard will lead with one of the top running backs in the valley with senior Marcus Fulcher who last year rushed for 1,756 yards and scored 20 totals touchdowns. Fulcher is the kind of back that will wear you down in the 2nd half of every game.
A star will be born with junior fullback/safety Shalom Welch. This kid showed his stuff in the playoffs last year and he is strong and physical.
The QB is now sophomore Bryce Weiner.
The Knights O-line will be very good with Tommy Slatic (DL) and Michael Smith (DL). Inside linebacker and he is good with Jacob Levato.
The Knights will be awesome on defense with seniors Kyrece Hildreth, Roman Wells and Kai Sunamoto who is the best Knights athlete and will be outstanding on both sides of the ball at wing/safety.
The X factor The Knights will get better and better each week.

Head Coach Atnaf Harris
Harris is the new coach and he graduated from Edison. The Tigers have had 10 very good players transfer away. Let me say that again, 10 OUTSTANDING PLAYERS have left the program.
The Tigers are young but very deceptive. Junior Jameson Silva will start at QB. The Offensive line has good size but is young starting 3 sophomores. 6’5, 350 senior Rj Garcia will anchor the O-line. Senior RB McKinley Lee III wants to show the Section that he is the best running back around!
Defense will be a little smaller up front but very fast and competitive. Senior Kwebena Watson has the keys to the car that will drive the defense. Look for teams to be running away from Watson.
The X factor is the Tigers offensive. It’s start out slow every year.
Pag Meter note-
The Edison administration expects the Tigers to win every year but the football program has their hands tied year after year. Former Tigers coach Matt Johnson tried to tell the administration what needs to be done for years but they simply don’t care so some kids will start to leave. Edison nation has to hope the new principal and administration will get it. It’s simple at Edison, it’s a hit and miss with a team being good or not and will never be consistent with the Edison administration mindset thinking now. If you really break it down, there are two schools at Edison. The Compu Tech that has over 75 % of the student and about 300 Edison athletes that play all the sports. Yep…300 kids, boys and girls combined. The Administration doesn’t want to change anything for a small part of the school when the Compu Tech is rolling. The problem is the Edison sports tradition is one of the best in the state and the Westside Community deserves more.
In a nutshell….every Edison opponent has early morning PE for football players and Edison doesn’t. Edison has to compete with teams that train and have everything needed before 3pm everyday. The Edison players show up at 3pm and leaves at 5:30 because the city bus comes and kids have to leave. Edison could be the Long Beach Poly of the valley but instead the administration wants more of a Pop Warner program.

The Knights are new to the Central Section and they will have a new QB with Chase Artopoeus who is a transfer from Thousand Oaks and he is very good with Ivy League offers.
The Knights don’t have a big roster and now has to play in division 1 and really should be in division 2 or 3.
The X factor for the Knights is so many players playing both ways and the defense.

The big issue every year for Ridgeview is discipline. I love Coach Manning and his staff because it’s simple….you better come to play and do what needs to be done on and off the field of your out. If that happens the Wolf Pack could have a very good year.
The Pack will have plenty of speed and returning at QB is junior Justin Hinzo after throwing for 1,600 yards.
Senior Tahj Wright is now at Ridgeview after leaving Bakersfield. If Wright can get it done on and off the field then watch out. Wright could be playing some QB. Junior Alijah Alexander-Williams has the makings to be a 1,500 yard rusher.
Keep an eye on WR/DB Daelin Degraffenreid because he could have a big year!
Plenty return on the offensive line and defensive side of the ball.
The X factor is being more consistent. Last year…very streaky team.

The Apaches will do well during the non league schedule and might struggle during the CMAC play. The Apaches will always play hard and they lost their playmaker Jalen Cropper to Buchanan with a transfer so they need to regroup and play good old Sanger football.
The QB spot will be Noel Collazo and/or John Pena. The offensive line will be a work in progress and leading the way will be senior Isaac Salas (DL). The Running backs will be tough with juniors Orlando Douglas, Kosi Agina (DB), senior Alex Saefong (DB) and David Ayala.
The defense will be led by D-end Jamarie Jenkins.
The X factor is the offense line and the defensive. The Apaches will get better and better each week.

The Golden Hawks graduated 30 players from last year and you will see new faces all over the place. Two way player senior Grant Bloom returns at running back and linebacker along with outstanding senior TE/DE 6’5 Colby Warkentin who verbally committed to play at Fresno State,
It’s still too early to tell how good the G Hawks will be so stay tuned.

The Golden Eagles lost a tone of fire power with graduation but they still have one of the best QB’s in the valley with senior Dante Chachere who last year threw for 3,462 yards with 22 TD passes, rushed for 441 yards. Having a very good senior QB with some new players is not a bad thing.
The Clovis West offense will be young with an up-tempo get after it attitude. Senior Nick Keenan (FS) will be getting plenty of carries at running back. The receivers are good again with seniors Cam Hicks (OLB) and Chris Coleman. The offensive line will be led by senior RT Eric Castillo.
The defense will have one of the best linebackers in the valley with senior Thomas Curran.
The Clovis West X factor is the the running game and can they run north and south. Can the Golden Eagles defense replace some great seniors? The defensive backs are also a big X factor. CW has a very tough schedule with a young team.

The QB will be junior Xavier Corona who is a real good athlete.
At running back look for hard nose runner junior Jo’nation Dejohnette to run hard in the middle.
Here some names to keep an eye on. Seniors Ryan Hunt (RB/LB), Asa Morales (Mike Backer), Sebastian Zenteno (OT/DT), Andrew Gomez (OG/DE) David Burciaga (Safety), Justice Cantu (Corner). All were Juniors last year that made big contributions to the team and look to build on their seasons with another year in Coach Reynolds system. Last year Sophs on varsity, Blake Baldwin (LB/TE), Christian Hudiburgh (DE/FB), Chandler Hamilton (RB/Wing/CB) and Godo Aguilar (LB) will continue to develop.
The JV Squad went 9-1 last year. The young T Wolves are coming on….

Last year the Broncos were very young and played a tough schedule but never got it going. The defense was real good but the offense struggled.
Broncos have a lot of work to do but are getting better with every practice.
Defensively, Trenton Holloway will be an impact player in the secondary as will as Towasin Akindele at linebacker. Both are physical players.
The team leader on both sides of the ball will be Drew Hirayama at DE/FB.
On offense, with dependable hands and good blocking skills will be John Shook. But the offensive line will be a quality group that are going to make Bronco fans proud.
Juniors DJ Frampton will be the QB and will be much better with one year of experience under his belt.
Senior Jackson Schultz will lead the running backs. Former Bronco All Star and now UCLA Bruin Bolu Olorunfunmi’s little brother Okiki could be the sleeper of the year at wide receiver.
The X Factor is the Broncos defense.
The Broncos will only play 9 games. They were scheduled to play at Arroyo Grande on Aug 17 but the Eagles canceled the game and Arroyo Grande will play San Luis Obispo instead.

Coach Reynolds took over the Bearcats after the season started in week 2 and got hot in the 2nd half to win the Pac 5. This team could be the sleeper team and new to the Central Section. The QB will be sophomore 6’3 Braden Waterman. and he has the potential to be real good.
The receivers are good with juniors Marshall Weisner and Kaden Gallant. The lead running back will be Nathan Garcia (MLB).
The offensive line is led by senior Hector Arteaga,
The defense will have some new faces and leading the way will be senior John Morones, Luis Martinez (LB) and Corban Payne (LB).
The Bearcats X factor will be the offensive line is young and the defense is young but the Bearcats had a great summer with getting after it.

The QB will be Tyler Chapman who played last year as a sophomore earning important reps, often running the offense out of the pistol with a heavy dose of the option. Senior TE/DE Seth Robasciotti will be the leader on both sides of the ball.
The defense will be better this year with seniors Salvatore Derose (DL) and Cullen Cooper (DB)
The X factor the Greyhounds will be young on both sides of the ball and will improve each week.
