WSL Week 1 Review
WSL Athletics Preview Week 1, 9/1/2017
“Aztecs look to bounce back, Broncos look to go 2-0”
After an exciting and interesting week 0, we look towards week 1 of the high school football season where we will see even more interesting match-ups.
Tranquillity is looking that maybe a road trip to McFarland will be what the team needs to maybe finally get a win but they will have to do it against McFarland who already beat one WSL team on the road beating Avenal 7-0 and Tranquillity is coming off a 49-18 loss to Caruthers in their home opener last week. The Tigers of Tranquillity head off to McFarland to face off against the Cougars.
Dos Palos will take their momentum from the nail-biting
21-12 win against Sierra Pacific last week and hopefully, it will work for them as they face off against the Roosevelt Rough Riders at Ike Franklin Field at Bill Hume Stadium and try to go 2-0 under new HC Kevin Jones. Broncos of Dos Palos looking to end their opening homestand with a win against Roosevelt.
Mendota is looking to bounce back in a much-needed win after their opening 48-20 loss last week against Orestimba and they will have to get that win against their now Division 4 opponent Liberty-Madera Ranchos who they’ve met before in both regular season play and playoffs. Mendota is trying to avoid a 0-2 start which hasn’t happened since 2010 and it has happened five times in its history since 2004 (2004: 0-2, Parlier 43-0, Bakersfield Christian 35-20, 2007: 0-2, Caruthers 42-7, Frazier Mountain 20-7, 2008: 0-2, Dos Palos 51-8, Caruthers 24-0, 2009: 0-2, Dos Palos 48-0, Caruthers 27-12, 2010: 0-2, Caruthers 46-27, Liberty-Madera Ranchos 21-14) Mendota Aztecs looking to bounce back and ground the Hawks of Liberty-Madera Ranchos on Friday Night. (See Note bottom of the page regarding start time changes)
Coalinga will be making the trip up US-101 to face off against the Gonzalez Spartans in their search of their second straight win of 2017 as for Gonzalez they’re looking for their first win of their season after losing their home opener to Fremont 62-7 last week. last time these two teams faced off was last season in Coalinga where the Horned Toads won it 47-23 so will history repeat itself on the road or will the Spartans defend their home field?
Avenal will host the Lindsay Cardinals on Friday night as both of these teams are looking for their first wins of the year. Avenal fell to McFarland 7-0 as Lindsay fell to Exeter 36-6 so both teams will enter 0-1 and in the end only one team will leave 1-0 and 0-2…will it be Avenal or Lindsay? we will find out Friday Night
Firebaugh will soar off to Fowler to face off the Redcats who are coming off a 33-12 win over Corcoran so the Eagles will have their hands full as they are still licking their wounds after Liberty-Madera Ranchos came to town and put the beat down at Eagles Stadium 55-34. Firebaugh files off to Fowler Friday Night.
