Sanger Sports In Review

Sanger Apaches sports teams are participating in a wide variety of tournaments to kick off the season, along with having to roll with the punches as games and matches being rescheduled due to weather conditions this week. Hard work is already starting to pay off at the beginning of the fall season.

Football had a great week, with a win for the freshman, JV, and varsity teams. Freshmen won 26-6, led by John Peña at Quarterback. The JV team beat the Warriors 42-6. Jorge Peña got his first win as head coach as the varsity Apaches beat Fresno 42-0. There were standout performances on both sides of the ball from Jalen Cropper, Blake Wolf, David Ayala, and Josiah Lopez.

The Apache girls volleyball teams were swept by Exeter’s teams on Tuesday. The varsity team is participating in the Clovis Invitational over this first weekend of September. 

Boys water polo had 4 games over the weekend and won two, lost two. Their next games are this weekend.

Girls water polo had two games in a tournament on Saturday. The Apache girls won with a score of 4-3 against Clovis North and beat Monache 7-4. Their game scheduled for Tuesday the 28th at Clovis was postponed due to air quality. 

Girls golf played in the Lemoore Invitational on Monday the 28th and got 4th place. They also hosted the Sanger Invitational on Wednesday and placed 2nd as a team. Maddie Berry, a junior on the team, said, “Our team gets along really well. We all hang out together… and love goofing around with each other.” Her favorite aspect of this year’s team is all of her teammates are returning players to this team, allowing them to keep progressing, learning, and moving forward from their very successful season last year. Staying positive and focused despite the circumstances is a key to improvement and success for this tight-knit team. Girls golf has a match against Mt. Whitney on Friday the 30th, and are participating in the WGANC Invitational in Madera on Tuesday. 

Girls tennis had a match scheduled for Tuesday against Clovis that was canceled due to the air quality. It is expected to be made up sometime in October. Their next match is set for Tuesday, September 5th at Central. 

The Apache cross country team has their first meet this Saturday, participating in the DeWitt Invitational in Madera.
