WSL Athletics Preview Week 1

Mendota’s debut in Division 4 &  Dos Palos starting anew with new head coaching staff
It’s finally here… The week we’ve been all waiting… Week 1 is here and it’s packed with excitement and anticipation with an exciting slate of games to kick off another football season.
Mendota is coming back as section and league Champions and debuting in Division 4 after spending four years in Division 5 and in 2016 winning their first and only section title and qualified for the State playoffs in Division 6-AA. Mendota will open the season at home in the newly renovated Aztec Stadium hosting Orestimba (Newman) with the latest lines holding Mendota -10.
Firebaugh comes in this season as section runner-ups to Mendota in last year’s Division V Valley Championship Game and enters the season one of the favorites in Division V since Mendota’s promotion to Division Four. In Coach Dejon Kelly’s 2nd season after coming off an 11-3 season last year is optimistic his team can have a successful season and make a return back to the Section Championship. They open the season at home against Liberty-Madera Ranchos.
Tranquillity Tigers are looking for answers to fix the issues that have plagued the program with consecutive losing seasons and fighting with Avenal to see who would finish as the bottom feeders of the WSL. Finishing last year with a 3-8 record and one win in WSL Play. The Tigers of Tranquillity open on the road at Caruthers.
Avenal is on an up and down trend after making appearances in the Division VI championship games but falling short… Have been falling short as of late, finishing 3-7 and last in WSL Play last season they look for solutions to finally climb out of the cellar and go back to their winning ways. They open the season at home against the McFarland Cougars
Coalinga has had some good years but have fallen on hard times, Since joining and winning the WSL Title in 2012 they have hit rock bottom with a combined record of 11-30. They have had some talent play JuCo ball and we’ll they’re looking towards the future and finally reaching their potential. They open the season at home against the Wasco Tigers
Dos Palos has had a very tough off season as they have been rocked by scandals and turmoil to the point where they fired the coaching staff and hired JV coach Kevin Jones to take over the program and they have their hands full with their opener against Sierra Pacific
