CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES-NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

2017 basketball season was the year for the record books.

Here is the PAG METER/940 ESPN ALL VALLEY ALL STAR BASKETBALL TEAM

TEAM OF THE YEAR

CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES

The Clovis West Golden Eagles did something that might never happen again. The public high school won the state championship playing against the private professional high schools in the open division with a record of 34-2. Also the Clovis West Golden Eagles finished the year as the Valley champions, State Champions and National Champions. We might someday have again a state champion in another division but never again in the private professional division.

The FAB-Five seniors of Sarah Bates, Megan Anderson, Danae Marquez, Bri Sanders and Tess Amundsen, were amazing playing together. Without each other, zero chance the Golden Eagles beat anybody in the private professional high school open division. The bench players on Clovis West would have started on any other team in the valley. Big contributors to the team were junior Adriana Maldonado who is the best athlete on the team and will play Soccer at Nebraska. Adriana would have been the best player on any other team in the valley and stay tuned if she plays basketball next year. Sophomore Maddie Campbell made the Sophomore All State team and will be in the spotlight in 2018. She played the perfect role with the Fab 5 seniors. Sophomore Champney Pulliam who can flat out shoot will be a big part of 2018. Junior Ava Emerzian was hurt all year and will be ready to go next year. Junior Briara Robles has the makings to be real good but might not play next year. Sophomore Aari’yanna Sanders should make big sister proud. Senior Elizabeth Parker is another good player. Sophomore Micah Lee will also be very good next year.

PAG METER COACH OF THE YEAR

CRAIG CAMPBELL, CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES

CW finished the year at 34-2. The Golden Eagles were Valley, State and National Champions. Say what you want about Craig Campbell because many don’t like his coaching style. I get that a lot of teams/coaches either hate or they are jealous of Clovis West and it was apparent in the All League TRAC voting when Campbell wasn’t voted coach of the year but was voted state coach of the year. Are you kidding me!! Hey other TRAC coaches, that’s embarrassing!

Congratulation Coach Campbell because Clovis West did something that might never happen again…..State Champions in the open division.

CO- Players of the Year

SARAH BATES, Senior, CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES

A very fierce competitor that played so hard for the National Champions. Sarah scored the last 11 points in the win over Archbishop Mitty 44-40 to help with the open division state championship. The Golden Eagles were pretty much a done deal until Sarah got hot for the greatest team in valley history finishing off the greatest story of all time. Maybe a movie? Stay tuned. Sarah was CalHi All State player of the year and UC Santa Barbara is getting a good one.

DANAE MARQUEZ, Senior, CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES

The greatest ball handler and the best point guard in school history. The future San Jose State Spartan made 2 of the biggest free throws in school history. In the state championship game against Archbishop Mitty, she hit 2 free throws with 5.4 seconds to go to secure the open division championship. Danae’s leadership was huge on and off the court and was a CalHi All State All Star.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

MEGAN ANDERSON, Senior, CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES

Megan was the best pure shooter in the valley! Her 3-point shooting set up everything inside for the State Champions. At any other school, the future San Jose State Spartan would have averaged 40 points a game but the way CW plays, Megan was more effective and most dangerous playing the CW way. Megan averaged over 10 rebounds per game and was 2nd team Cal Hi All State All Star. Megan was snubbed because of politics on the TRAC All League voting because of pure jealousy and as you can tell, the Pag Meter is still not happy about it.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

BRE’YANNA SANDERS, Senior, CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES

Bri came alive when the valley playoffs started because she turned it up like no other on offense and defense. Bri was physical in the paint with rebounding that CW didn’t have at the beginning of the year. She started blocking shots, stealing and scoring. The McDonald’s All-American Game nominee and future Arizona State Sun Devil came up with the biggest block shot in school history in the state championship game. With less than 30 seconds to go and against Archbishop Mitty, Bri stepped in the paint and swatted a potential Mitty layup away. HUGE! Bri was CalHi 2nd team All State All Star.

UNDERCLASSMAN OF THE YEAR

RAMANI PARKER, Sophomore, CENTRAL GRIZZLIES

Sky’s the limit for this 6-3 star. Just made the U16 USA National team. Ramani will be the most recruited player in the valley in a while. Central will be a big time contender with Parker.

Pag Meter 940 ESPN All Valley All Star Team

JANELLE SUMILONG, senior, Hanford Bullpups

She was a scoring machine and Hanford needed every point. Everybody knew Janelle was going to shoot, and still the future Nevada Wolf Pack put up 23 points per game.

HALEY BETTENCOURT, Junior SIERRA PACIFIC GOLDEN BEARS

A huge part of the best team in school history and just wait for next year because the Golden Bears will be even better. The Golden Bears finish with a 29-5 record and division 4 section champions.

TESS AMUNDSEN, Senior, CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES

Zero chance that Clovis West wins it all if Tess is not on the Golden Eagles. For half the season Tess took one for the team and came off the bench even though she was clearly the 5th best player in the valley. It was frustrating but it never showed it because Tess looked at the big golden ticket. The Boise State Broncos are getting a TREMENDOUS team player. Tess was another player snubbed in the TRAC All League voting due to jealously.

RACHEL BERRY, Senior, CLOVIS COUGARS

Only a very few players in the valley could have started for the National Champion Clovis West team and Rachel is one of them. One of the best and hard working players in the valley that averaged 21 PPG. The Fresno Pacific Sunbirds are getting a good one. She will be the leader on the floor on both sides of the ball.

KAHLAIJAH DEAN, Junior, INDEPENDENCE FALCONS

She was a big part of Indy winning the division 2 section championship. She will come in as one of the best players in the valley next year.

HAILEY SCOTT, Senior, MONACHE MARAUDERS

Had a tremendous career for the Marauders. The senior leader averaged 17 points 12 rebounds per game.

TAYLOR PILOT, Sophomore, CLOVIS NORTH BRONCOS

The Broncos are in good hands the next 2 years. She averaged 17 ppg and is on the radar for many colleges checking her out. The Broncos should be very good with most everybody coming back.

DANA DEGRAFFENREID, Senior, RIDGEVIEW WOLF PACK

The Sacramento State-bound forward was the South Yosemite League co-MVP. She averaged 20.3 points per game.

MADISON (MADDIE) CAMPBELL, Sophomore, CLOVIS WEST GOLDEN EAGLES

Maddie was put on the map after scoring 23 points against Miami Country Day that was ranked No 4 in the country. Maddie was perfect playing with the Fab 5 seniors and now will be the main Golden Eagle the next 2 years

JASMIN DIXON, Senior, INDEPENDENCE FALCONS

The big factor for the Falcons winning 3 straight section championship. The Cal State Bakersfield-bound guard averaged 14.5 points, 3.7 assists and 2.9 steals and finished her career with a school-record 1,402 points.

SERENA YBARRA, Sophomore, COALINGA HORNED TOADS

A star was born with Serena and she will only get better. She averaged 24 points, and 10 Rebounds per game.

SHAY GIBBONS, Junior, BULLARD KNIGHTS

CMAC All Star had the Knights in every game averaging 17 PPG and 9 rebounds per game.

KATE MCCLARD, Junior, HANFORD BULLPUPS

Will be one of the best in the valley her senior year after averaging 16 points, and 10 rebounds her junior year.

TAYLOR CALDWELL, Junior, BAKERSFIELD DRILLERS

The SWYL MVP did it all for the Drillers. Led the team with 15.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 5.4 steals and 2.9 blocks and watch out because her senior year will be off the charts.

SAMANTHA NAVARRO, Senior, REDWOOD RANGERS

The WYL All Star had an outstanding career for the Rangers. She will play in the North-South All Star game on June 24 at Fresno City

RHEGAN FERNANDEZ, Junior, MISSION OAK HAWKS

One of the best guards in the valley. The EYL player of the year will be even tougher to stop her senior year. She averaged 16 points and 8 assist per game.

EMILY MENDOZA, Senior, MCLANE HIGHLANDER

One of the best to players at McLane and was a big part of the Highlanders winning the NYL for the time in school history. She averaged 20 points per game.

KAMBRAYIA ELZY, Junior, MISSION OAK HAWKS

Had a fantastic junior year after averaging 19 points per game. The Hawks will be real good next year with Kam.

ALYSSA BURTON, Senior, MADERA COYOTES

The CMAC All Star was the Coyotes leader that averaged 15 PPG along with 8 rebounds per game

KAMERON TAYLOR, Senior, BAKERSFIELD CHRISTIAN EAGLES

A dynamic scorer, she led the section with 24.1 points per game. Scored at least 20 points in final 11 games, helping BCHS advance to the SoCal D-V quarterfinals.
